Drive on the wrong side of the road to get even more respect bonus and try to barrel through traffic…then hit that slow moving compact head on, send the driver through their own front windshield to get yet another respect bonus. Grab them and toss them off a bridge to get a throwing bonus. Shoot someone in the crotch for a ‘nut shot’ and gain some spare respect. It’s great, it’s arcadey, and there are a LOT of satisfying ways to kill people. I don’t know where to begin with the combat. It’s not a game-killer, but it’s something to be aware of.

Maybe that’s why the it automatically saves every time you accomplish something, regardless of how minor. Unfortunately, the game did freeze up a couple times during my first playthrough. It controls exactly like the first game and it works. There’s nothing wrong with it and, thankfully, it is not buggy to the degree where you’ll find your car mysteriously thrown into the air by hitting a small rock (as would happen way too often in GTA IV), nor will you get physically trapped anywhere when walking. In terms of controlling your thug, it’s what you expect. As a side note: the game is LOUD as it’s being read by the 360 – due probably to streaming the content. Civilians may simply not load fast enough for my taste, but I’m sure it will irk others as well. Sometimes the streets would be full, other times it was a ghost town. The population in each borough seemed to fluctuate almost randomly. On several occasions, it felt empty and desolate. But it can get a little…lonely sometimes. It’s not gritty and it’s not supposed to be. Stillwater itself is, geographically, almost exactly the same as it was in the first game. Sarah Palin? Well, I wouldn’t – but you could.Īfter that and a brief tutorial level, it’s time to take over Stillwater and destroy the four competing gangs (& 1 corporate faction) in the process. As some game trailers showed: wanna be John McCain? Go for it.

There are almost countless appearance options. You’re in a prison hospital recuperating from disfiguring burns – which paves the way (and presents the perfect excuse) for the first bit of joy: building your character. Saints Row 2 picks up a short time after the ending of the first game. And to its credit, it revels in that craziness. If GTA IV wanted to be a serious work (which it undoubtedly did), then Saints Row is ALMOST the antithesis of that – It’s The Three Stooges. To quote the Something Awful forum goons: “Saints Row 2 – Doing right what GTA 4 did wrong.” Is Saints Row 2 a better game than GTA IV? Not necessarily. I’m just going to get the inevitable comparison out of the way first.
